Antibiotics for Horses

Horse antibiotics are used to treat common bacterial infections in horses. Whether it’s treating a topical skin infection (wound or abscess), pneumonia, or diarrhea—antibiotics help your horse recover and return to peak performance.

Equine antibiotic lists include broad-spectrum control, meaning these antibiotics are active against multiple strains of bacteria. Some are narrow-spectrum, meaning they target specific bacterial strains. Prescription antibiotics for horses are prescribed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your horse’s veterinarian will know which antibiotic is best for treating the condition. Antibiotics work by killing disease-causing pathogens, allowing the horse’s immune function to fight the infection. Unfortunately, systemic antibiotics cannot differentiate between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria. After a course of antibiotic therapy, some horses may need a round of probiotic and/or prebiotic therapy to help re-establish normal gut flora and recover from antibiotic treatment.

Several types of antibiotics are available to treat bacterial infections. They include injectable forms, like penicillin for horses; oral antibiotic tablets, such as SMZ-TMP; and topical antibiotics, such as Vetasan Ointment. They are all designed to either selectively treat or systemically treat depending on the type of infection. Leedstone offers these and more horse antibiotics!

In addition to shopping for antibiotics, don’t forget the bandaging material needed for wound dressing, horse vaccines to prevent bacterial infections like strangles and Potomac horse fever, and needles and syringes to administer the medications needed for your horse.
