Dog Antibiotics & Antifungal Medications

Antibiotics for dogs and antifungal medication for dogs are available in many forms for ease of administration and compliance. Prescription antibiotics for dogs are available in pill form, tablets, liquid suspension, drops, and ointments designed to treat systemic or local infections.

Dog antibiotics are commonly used to treat bacterial infections of the intestines, respiratory tract, skin, mouth, eyes, ears, urinary tract, and other organs. Some of the most common antibiotics used are Amoxicillin and Cephalexin. Both are used to treat bacterial infections in dogs. Typical side effects of giving oral antibiotics to dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and allergic reactions. As with any medication, contact your pet’s veterinarian if he or she experiences any of these side effects. Antibiotic drops or ointments are most often used to treat eye, ear, or local skin infections. Sometimes oral antibiotics are indicated based on the severity of infection.

Antifungal medications for dogs are used to treat fungal infections which can affect multiple organs of the animal’s body. Fungi naturally live in the environment. The spores become airborne and gain entrance through the body via respiratory tract or skin. Common antifungal medications stem from the antifungal drug class imitazole, such as Ketoconazole. This class of medications have similar side-effects as antibiotics for dogs, including vomiting, diarrhea, and inappetence (lack of appetite).

It is not uncommon for a pet to be placed on antibiotics sometime during their lifetime. Many dogs experience ear infections or a urinary tract infection. Ear antibiotics for dogs are usually administered directly into the ear canal to treat yeast and or bacterial ear infections. Antibiotics for UTI in dogs include Amoxicillin, Baytril, and SMZ-TMP tablets.
