Implants for cattle are used in calves to improve feed efficiency and increase weight gain for additional profits during finishing. The best growth implant for cattle may not be determined by brand such as Zoetis, Merck, or Elanco; the best results are found by implanting at the right stage for your operation. Implants are used in beef cattle: suckling calves, stockers, and feedlot animals. Cattle implants are composed of small pellets containing natural or synthetic hormones to stimulate growth production. Three types of hormones are used: androgen, progesterone, and estrogen. Implants are composed of one or two hormones and administered under the skin on the backside of the ear. Each implant features a duration of activity as an aid in determining when to administer the implants for cow-calf operations, stockers, and feedlot producers. Studies have determined implanted cattle have a positive impact to help the producer achieve a great profit in comparison to non-implanted cattle.
