Mastitis Treatment

Mastitis is an infection of the mammary gland most commonly plaguing dairy cattle in both lactating-cow and dry-cow periods. Mastitis in dairy cattle is described as subclinical or clinical mastitis. Subclinical mastitis is the presence of an infection without visible signs of inflammation or infection. It can be detected by testing milk for somatic cell counts (scc) using cow-side tests like California Mastitis Test and others to indicate subclinical cases. Clinical mastitis is an inflammatory response to infection, with symptoms including change in milk color, clotting, udder swelling and fever.

Multiple intramammary antibiotic treatments are available to treat mastitis caused by bacterial pathogens. These products are used to treat clinical mastitis; aseptically applied directly into the teat canal. In severe cases, fever reducing products are also indicated for cow comfort.

Early detection of subclinical mastitis can help reduce costly mastitis treatment after the fact. Shop all mastitis detection products here.

Mastitis infections in cattle also occur during the dry period of the lactation cycle. Intramammary dry-cow treatment is used specifically during this period. Dry-cow intramammary treatment, followed by internal teat sealant application, became a common practice many years ago for blanket dry-cow therapy to help reduce cases during the first 10 to 14 of days of the dry-off period. Leedstone offers diagnostic tools to help determine mastitis cases for targeted treatment, as well as antibiotics to treat mastitis, teat sealant for dry cows, and mastitis vaccine.
