Vaccines

As a dairy farmer or rancher, there is nothing more serene on a crisp spring morning than watching a calf being born. Once the calf softly hits the ground, it’s truly amazing to see the steam roll off the calf as the mom prepares to clean her new baby. The calf begins to stand on wobbly legs as it adjusts to its new surroundings—giving you the satisfaction of gaining another healthy calf. Now it’s your turn to care for the calf and it starts with newborn vaccines. Scour prevention is a priority on every cow-calf operation as it is the number one cause of calf death. When you vaccinate pregnant cows with a scour vaccine it brings passive transfer to unborn calves. As soon as possible after birth, feed the calf good-quality colostrum and use a preventative product such as First Defense Tri-Shield. First Defense products contain bovine maternal antibodies and provide immediate immunity to fight rota, corona, and e. coli pathogens. There are other quality product options to give at birth to prevent scours. Shop our scour vaccine for calves section here.

Calf pneumonia is another culprit youngstock must combat. There are two different pneumonia pathogens—viral and bacterial. Pneumonia is the second most common cause of death in calves. Calf pneumonia vaccines for newborns or just days-of-age calves are administered intranasal, such as Inforce 3 or Nasalgen 3-PHM. This helps prime the calf’s immune system against major pneumonia pathogens without interfering with maternal antibodies from colostrum. Once the calf is between 8 to 12 weeks of age, it can receive a modified live or killed vaccine subcutaneously. A common calf vaccine may include a 5-way viral respiratory, with or without bacterial pneumonia strains, clostridium, including, tetanus or pinkeye. Arming calves with right product at the right time can help them succeed in building a healthy immune system. Seek guidance from your veterinarian to determine which protocol is best for your specific operation. Recommendations can change from year-to-year and depend on your farm’s procedures and disease risk. If you can’t find the vaccine you are looking for, never hesitate to reach out to us!
