Metronidazole tablets are used for the treatment of protozoal and bacterial infections in dogs and cats. Used in horses to treat susceptible anaerobic infections. Commonly used for treating protozoal infection, giardia, in dogs and cats. Features immune-modulating activity and may be prescribed to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or colitis. Can be used with corticosteroids in the treatment of IBD or gum disease (gingivitis/stomatitis) in cats and dogs. Tablets are given orally and are generally well absorbed. They may be crushed and mixed with food for animals which are difficult to administer to orally. Use in horses to treat anaerobic infections susceptible to Metronidazole and to treat Clostridium perfringens in foals.

  • May be used in conjunction with corticosteroids.
  • May also treat inflammatory bowel disease, periodontal disease and some diarrheal disorders.
  • Peak medication levels occur about one hour after dosing.
  • Especially effective against anaerobic infections.
  • Can penetrate bone, making it useful in dental applications.
  • Has anti-inflammatory properties in the large intestine and is effective in treating diarrhea caused by certain diseases.
  • May cause allergic reactions.
  • Do not give to pregnant animals.
  • Use with caution in pets with liver disease, anemia, epilepsy, or nerve disorders.
  • Possible serious side effects are seizures, fever, chills, sores on the inside of the mouth, or bloody diarrhea. If any of these symptoms occur, contact your veterinarian immediately.
  • Tell your veterinarian if your pet is on any other medications to prevent interactions.

The usual dose for dogs ranges from 3 to 23-mg per lb of bodyweight 1 to 4 times daily. The usual dose for cats ranges from 5 to 23-mg per lb of bodyweight 1 to 2 times daily.

The dose for horses in treating susceptible anaerobic infections is 10 to 25-mg/kg 2 to 4 times daily. Foals with Clostridium perfringens give at rate of 10 to 15-mg/kg 3 to 4 times a day (depending on the severity).

The actual dosage and duration of treatment depends on the condition being treated. Follow the prescribed instructions from your veterinarian carefully. Always give medication for the entire duration unless otherwise directed.
