It is recommended to give a local analgesic to any animal that is being dehorned. Restrain the animal and use a halter and lead rope to fix the calf’s head. Clip the hair around the base of the horn. Allow the dehorner to heat up completely. Use the correct sized tip, so that it makes a ring ¼ of an inch around the horn. Place the dehorner over the horn and put even pressure. Let the dehorner sit between 10 to 15 seconds.
When the dehorner is removed, there should be an even, copper-colored circle around the horn. If the circle is not there, replace the dehorner for another 10 seconds. The horn bud can be scooped out or allowed to slough off. Do not dehorn calves that are older than 12 weeks using this method.
