Before using for the first time, precondition the battery by charging with the wall plug adapter for 24 hours. For calves with horn buds which are only just palpable, there is no need for any special preparation of the dehorning site. Properly restrain the animal before dehorning. With the cap removed, and the wrist put through the sling, place the dehorner head over the palpable horn and press down firmly. This triggers the dehorner to automatically turn on; shown by the LED. When smoke appears, rotate the dehorner back and forth 2 or 3 times to cut a ring through the hair, the skin and the horn tissue right down to the skull. Withdraw the dehorner, which will switch the unit off. This should take between 5 and 7 seconds. For calves with horn buds clearly visible, follow the above directions. Then, after cutting a complete ring around the obvious horn bud it is necessary to remove the created disc of horn tissue in the center of the ring. This should take between 8 and 12 seconds. After each dehorning operation it is important to check for a full white circular incision down to the skull; briefly reapply if necessary. It is suggested to dehorn individual calves as soon as possible to prevent the calf numbers to build up. It is the most efficient use of this product.
