Clip hair close to skin over the vein where catheter will be placed (jugular, lateral thoracic, cephalic or saphenous vein). Clean area with disinfectant such as alcohol and iodine scrub or chlorhexidine scrub. Select the appropriate sized catheter for the animal and fluids being administered.
Insert catheter and tape in. Leave the catheter unbandaged (except leg catheters), this allows you to closely monitor any abnormalities. Attach fluid-filled bag and tubing to the catheter. A triple antibiotic ointment may be applied at the insertion site on the skin to decrease abnormalities.
