Cefazolin is an antibiotic of the cephalosporin class. Similar to penicillin in mode of action in treating bacteria, however broader spectrum. Cefazolin is reconstituted prior to administration and most commonly administered by veterinarians or veterinary staff during the pet’s hospitalization. It is used in both dogs and cats to treat a variety of bacterial infections, skin infections, wound infections, bone infections, pneumonia, and bladder infections.

Labeled for: dogs and cats

Species: dog, cat

  • Effective antibiotic in treating a broad range of bacterial infections.
  • Because it is given IV, it quickly produces high levels of antibiotic therapy.
  • Give IV slowly; if given too rapidly, it may cause the animal to vomit.
  • Not to be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug. If an animal has known sensitivities or allergy or vomiting from other cephalosporin drugs (cefadroxil) or penicillin’s (amoxicillin, ampicillin), cross-reaction with cefazolin is possible.
  • May interact with other medications; consult with your veterinarian to determine if other drugs your pet is receiving could interact with cefazolin. Such drugs include certain other antibiotics.
  • The most common side effect in animals is vomiting shortly after administration.
  • It is not unusual for some animals to develop diarrhea from orally administered antibiotics such as cefazolin. However, this has not been a common complaint with cefazolin.

The typical dose 20 to 25 mg/kg, every 6 to 8 hours, intramuscular or intravenous administration. Reconstitute with sterile water according to the label. Store in the refrigerator up to 10 days post-reconstitution. Cefazolin (IV) has been used prophylactically 1 hour before surgery. Administer intravenously through IV catheter over a period of 5 minutes. For veterinary use only.
