- Do not lock the calves’ hips in the pelvic inlet of the cow.
- Make sure chains and straps are properly positioned to avoid injury to the calf.
Scrub your hands and arms with warm soapy water. Use approved OB lube to lubricate the reproductive tract. Wash manure off the vulva, pin bones and thighs. Check the position of the calf. To attach the chain, loop it above the fetlock and then make a half hitch on the fetlock. Make certain that the chain is positioned in such a manner that it goes over the top of the toes, pulling the sharp points of the calf’s hooves away from the soft tissue of the vaginal wall. Hook the OB handles at the other end of the chains.
