Heparin is used for its anticoagulant properties; however, it will not dissolve an existing clot. It is most commonly used for IV catheter maintenance and excessive clotting, or increased risk of clot formation. Animals with serious medical problems will require close supervision and hematologic monitoring. Heparin is a prescription drug and used in a hospital setting and very rarely used in a home setting.
