After seeing a similar style used at a friend’s ranch, I thought about it for several weeks. I was very pleased to see Leedstone had them available! I chose the green ones as they matched my calf size. We got enough to do about half the calves. We placed them and let the calves back to the cows. NONE, NOT ONE calf with a flap bawled. Zip, nada, zilch! We left them for 5 days. we separated the calves, and removed the flaps, as well as the control group of calves that we separated that day also. The flap calves went to eating. They continually gained weight, none got sick, they just grew! 11 months later, the calves that used the flap are now about 100-150 lbs heavier than the others. I decided if 1 calf didn’t get sick, they paid for themselves. I also considered, at $2 per pound, at the time, if they held 2 more pounds of weight than the traditionally weaned calves, I got my money back. I have to say, I think the flaps made me an additinal $30-60 per calf at least, on the first use. so if they cost $3 each, they are worth 10-20 times what they cost. We are ordering more this year to do ALL of our calves to reap the full benefits of the no bawling weaning process. They are a bit more expensive than others I have seen on the market, 95% of them were retained and retrieved after 5 days. A few broke tines or lost the wing nut. I’d say they are a great value, and are nearly 100% effective.
